2017 Nominee for the Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award

Maureen Burnes’s flair for pedagogical innovation and creativity has made her a valued member of her school community.
Her passion is in literacy, and it is shown in her former capacities as a literacy coach and a literacy advisor on a regional and state level, and her co-authorship of two successful literacy programs. She has been actively involved in developing literacy programs in all of the schools she has worked at, creating positive learning experiences for all students.
Her career has included being a Principal and working in a range of areas in both Special Education and Professional Development.
Now Maureen can add 2017 Nominee for the Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award to that list.
The work she has done over a number of years has changed the lives of not only the students she has taught, but also the staff that have worked with her.
Maureen constantly keeps up to date with the latest educational practices and research. Her positive attitude and passion rubs off on her colleagues and she actively encourages her peers to further their knowledge in the field of literacy education.
Principal Deborah Driver states that “Maureen is a generous and inspiring teacher. She has made a great difference to whole school communities, to hundreds, if not thousands of teachers, several educational leadership teams and students from prep to high school years”.
Metropolitan Region Assistant Regional Director Karen Howes states that “Maureen has made an outstanding contribution to education. The high performance of a large number of Queensland state schools can be attributed to the leadership, and commitment and skills, of Maureen Burnes”.
With such glowing recommendations from her superiors, it is clear that Maureen’s work throughout her career has created a positive change and an enduring legacy in all the schools in which she has worked.
Congratulations Maureen on your nomination.
