Year 3 Adventures at the Planetarium and Mt Coot-tha

On Tuesday 29 May, all Year 3 students travelled by bus to the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens.  Our day was planned in three parts.

First we met an education officer who guided us through the gardens pointing out interesting flora and fauna.   Our session was called, “What’s Living in the Gardens”.  The focus was to look for features of living, nonliving and once living. This matched our Term One unit in Science. We gently dug under the surface of the leaf litter to discover several living creatures.

After Morning Tea we split into groups with our parent volunteers and explored the gardens by searching for things along the ‘Children’s Trail’.  It was a challenge to find everything on the checklist.

In the afternoon we visited the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.  We were fascinated by the night sky and how the stars appeared in the city compared to the country.   We watched the sky change from sunrise to sunset with the Earth’s rotation.  It was wonderful to learn about constellations and planets.
