Higher Order Thinking (HOM)

 

You Can Do It and Habits of Mind programs

All students at Camp Hill participate in a weekly Higher Order Thinking Skills program – students in Prep to Year 1 participate in the You Can Do It program; students in Years 2 to 6 participate in the Habits of Mind program.

These programs explicitly teach specific skills which underpin our school Expectations of Behaviour and are pivotal to empowering our students to be competent and confident members of the twenty-first century.

You Can Do It

The You Can Do It program that teaches children the skills of:

  • Confidence;
  • Persistence;
  • Getting Along;
  • Organization and
  • Resilience.

This program uses puppets that students can relate to, which supports them to develop the skills required to be active and informed learners.

Habits of Mind

The Habits of Mind (HoM) program teaches 16 Habits. These include:

  • Persistence;
  • Managing Impulsivity;
  • Listening with Understanding and Empathy;
  • Thinking Flexibly; Metacognition;
  • Striving for Accuracy;
  • Questioning and Problem Posing;
  • Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations;
  • Thinking and Communicating with Precision and Clarity;
  • Gathering Data through all Senses;
  • Creating Imaging and Innovating;
  • Responding with Wonderment and Awe;
  • Taking Responsible Risks;
  • Finding Humour;
  • Thinking Interdependently and
  • Remaining Open to Continuous Learning.

The students demonstrate considerable gains in confidence, deep understanding of their rights and roles in society and enjoyment in exploring in depth the skills taught.
