Absence from school

Attendance at school is compulsory from Prep to Year 6. However, if your child is absent from school through illness, or some other valid reason, contact the school prior to any absences and provide an explanation (preferable before 9.30am) via:

Electronic rolls are marked twice a day at 9.00am and at 1.55pm.

If a student is not present at roll marking they will be recorded as absent, but this can be modified on the day if the student arrives late or leaves early with the appropriate leave slip from the administration office– information is recorded by the school offices.

If you know in advance that your child will be absent for a period exceeding 2 days, the school should be notified beforehand.

Exemptions from compulsory schooling

What is an exemption?

Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled at and attending school.

Parents can apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot (or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances) attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days.

If your child is exempted from compulsory schooling, you are excused from your obligation in relation to compulsory schooling for the period of the exemption.

The school Principal is not responsible for providing an educational program to your child during the approved exemption period; however they may provide advice on other educational options available.

Who decides to grant or not grant an exemption?

Decisions about exemptions are made by the Principal.

Applying for an exemption

You are encouraged to discuss with the school or region whether an application for exemption is a suitable option. The school or region can provide you with an application form for an exemption. It is important that supporting documentation and evidence are attached to the application. The exemption needs to be applied for well in advance of the student absence.

When a decision about the exemption has been made, you will be informed in writing whether or not the exemption has been granted and if any conditions have been imposed. If you are not satisfied with the decision made, you can make a submission for the decision to be reviewed.

Where an application for exemption has not been made or has not been granted by the Principal, their absence from school will be recorded in accordance with the 'Roll marking in state schools' procedure.
