What is Reading to Learn?
The Reading to Learn (R2L) program, developed by Dr David Rose, is designed to integrate the teaching of curriculum, at each year level, alongside the teaching of required reading and writing skills.
Within every class there are students who have different needs. Consequently, teachers require sophisticated tools to design learning activities to address these needs. R2L provides a process and a set of strategies that enable teachers to support all the students in their class to read and write at the level they need to succeed. It is designed to allow every student to experience success and build confidence in reading and writing in every R2L lesson. Strategies are age appropriate and vary according to the needs of the students and their year level.
The diagram below shows a how each R2L teaching cycle is structured. First, it begins with the whole text, next a part of the text, then to the sentence level and finally, to the word level (spelling). It then builds back up again, in reverse order, finishing with a whole text (See diagram below).
Over the last five years, we have undertaken a process of teacher professional development and ongoing coaching and support related to this program. We have now embedded R2L across our school. It is one of our signature practices and was recognised as such in the 2019 School Review Report. It was acknowledged that "R2L is closely aligned to school reading and pedagogical frameworks" and that it was "key in successfully establishing a consistent approach to literacy learning across the whole school".
