To ensure schools are well-equipped to support all students, the Queensland Department of Education has made a significant investment through the Student Wellbeing Package, expanding the wellbeing workforce to provide every Queensland state school student with access to mental health and wellbeing support.
The role of a school psychologist is to deliver tailored, evidence-based psychological services that promote students' academic success, psychological health, and social and emotional wellbeing. School psychologists provide psychological assessment and intervention for students referred with mild to moderate mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, behavioural challenges, and those experiencing crisis situations.
With parental consent, school psychologists collaborate with teachers, wellbeing staff, and other school personnel to develop and implement strategies that support students across classroom, school, and home environments. They also liaise with regional and state-wide support services, external agencies, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and effective support for students experiencing mental health difficulties.
